AHA Big Brew Day - Saturday, May 7th 2011
« on: April 11, 2011, 04:50:07 AM »
Starting an official thread for the big brew day.   Location is settled on, we just need to start figuring out the logistics.  If anyone is interested in brewing, post a note here.   More details to come.

Note from Mike:

AHA stuff:
There are currently over 140 sites from around the world registered with AHA. Our "site" is registered with the AHA as Muskrat Mashers 2nd Anuual site#  ( I haven't registered yet, they want an email for contact - should I use the Muskrat Masher's or mine?)
We'll keep a record of how many gallons are brewed, and update the website when we're finished.
There are 3 suggested recipes from the AHA: East India Pale Ale, Wit, and Porter. In the past, we have brewed their suggestions about 1/2 the time. We may brew the Wit. We have a large bag of Coriander that we won't fully use.
Here is a link to the recipes: http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/pages/events/national-homebrew-day/recipes

Where:
Mike&Kathy's - email Rob for directions (muskratmashers@gmail.com) - Members/Non-Members welcome!
Our back patio or inside the garage if it's raining. Come on around back. Park in the driveway, or over in the park. Leave the far (east) side of the driveway open - everyone can use that side to unload equipment.

Time:
We are planning to get the patio setup to start brewing around 8am. If people want to get here earlier, that is fine.
Do you think that is early enough? We expect the party could go on all day/evening. In past Big Brews, some people showed up as late as 2pm to start brewing.

Who/how many:
We'll need a basic count of how many people want to brew, and what kind of systems they have (how much space). Someone (Dan?) mentioned at the March meeting that they only brew on the stove. I would like to encourage them to bring their equipment, and someone can hook them up with a burner for an hour to brew. We'll try to have one of ours available. If anyone needs other equipment, we should be able to accomodate. I have both propane tanks almost full. One will be hooked up to the grill, but can be removed unless we need to do some grilling.

Food:
What food is everyone bringing? Kathy and I will have pulled pork/buns and coleslaw. I heard someone was bringing quiche or frittata. We will have a pot of coffee and donuts/Timbits.

Kegs/Beer:
We will have the ten tap bar. It has all ball-locks. But some can be switched over to pin-lock if needed. We will probably have two kegs tapped.

This will be fun! We're really looking forward to a great day.

- Mike

I'll be there in the morning as my son's birthday party is also that day.
I'll be brewing my Lawnmower which is a straight extract so I will only need a little more than an hour of burner time.
Would anyone be interested if I brought homemade cinnamon rolls?

Sign me up to brew. I'd like a late morning or early afternoon time because I'm running my long run of the week that day.

I will be there to help out and shoot the breeze.  I will also bring my burner and tank for anyone that needs to use it.  Colleen is making a quiche and I will bring what is left of my Irish Red.

I bought almost everything I need for the wit yesterday. I'm going to try an all-grain brew for the first time using rob's mash tun after his brew. Looking forward to this. I'll also bring food and beer to share, but not sure what it will be yet.

My wife's goddaughter's 1st communion is that morning, so I'm going to have to go to that. I'm not sure how long it will last, but I'll see about stopping by afterwards.

I will bring some five gallon buckets for unhopped spent grains that anyone doesn't want.  I will make dog treats out of some and the rest will be given to a friend for her horse and goats.

Just an FYI - Mike had indicated that we'll have the patio ready for brewing.  We're actually getting the garage ready, with the patio available if needed and if the weather is good enough.  If anyone wants to drop systems off on Friday, just post a message before Friday on the forum and we'll let you know when we'll be home.

Really looking forward to this!!

Remember, even if you don't want to or can't brew on Saturday, you can always stop by to say "HI".

As much as we'd like to, Fred and I won't be able to participate in the Big Brew tomorrow.  We have some other obligations we have to take care of....bummer!  We are going to try to stop by to check in on how everybody is doing with their brews if we possibly can.  So sorry we can't be there! Have fun! - Deb

Thanks again for having us over and helping learn all grain brewing. The food was also excellent.
